  1. She was not know for donating to them, but for being their "patron". Being a "patron" helps the charity to cash in on the fame of the celebrity patron and get free publicity and attract donations. She was most famous for working for the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, and some AIDS charities. There is little evidence a royal patron benefits a charity that much. People still give without her.
  2. What she did was patron them so that she could highlight the issue and help raise funds or attention to the issue. For example, she traveled the world with the Red Cross to show the affects of land mines, the attention she paid to this cause helped get important UN laws passed on landmines. Her 2nd great cause was AIDS, she was one of the 1st famous people to touch those dying from AIDS at a time when people still feared getting HIV through physical contact; this helped to destroy myths and prejudices AIDS sufferers faced. She worked with the charity National AIDS Trust to dispel these myths and educate about HIV. She contributed financially to AIDS charities when she sold her dresses at auction donating the proceeds to charity; this raised nearly 6 million. While married she was patron of over 100 charities, but after the divorce she cut it down to the ones meaning the most to her: Landmine work with the Red Cross, AIDS, The Leprosy Mission, two children's hospitals: The Royal Marsden and Ormond Street, The English Ballet, and Centrepoint. The last one Centrepoint is patroned by Prince William still.
  3. The complete list is at the official website http://www.theworkcontinues.com At openings, the Princess of Wales would cut a ribbon to officially let people in a new building;she would unveil a plaque and give a short speech. Then the princess would visit with staff and patients.
